What to Expect From a Scotland Tour?

Large Couple Taking A Picture At Dunnottar Castle

Meeting Your Guide in Edinburgh

Your tour begins in the morning on Edinburgh’s Royal Mile. Before you set off, our Highland Explorer Tours reservations team will check you in and introduce you to your local driver-guide, who will be with you throughout the trip.

Life on the Road

Days on tour are designed to feel full without being rushed. Along the way, there are regular comfort stops, chances to grab a coffee or something to eat, time to browse local shops and plenty of opportunities to get out, stretch your legs and take photos.

Stories, Music and Local Insight

As you travel, your driver-guide will share stories about the places you visit, weaving together history, folklore, personal anecdotes and local recommendations. Between stops, a soundtrack of Scottish classics and contemporary artists helps set the mood for the journey.

Evenings and Overnight Stays

At the end of each day, your guide will drop you off at or close to your accommodation and let you know exactly where and when to meet the following morning. Guests staying in B&Bs and guesthouses can enjoy breakfast before setting off for the day, while hostel guests have access to kitchen facilities to prepare their own meals.

Back to Edinburgh

After a few days exploring Scotland’s islands, coastlines and Highland roads, your tour finishes back in the centre of Edinburgh.

All of our Scotland tours depart from Edinburgh city centre and return there at the end of the trip. Your exact meeting point can be found in your booking information or on our departure info page.

In as little as 3 days, you can experience some of Scotland’s most famous landscapes, including the Highlands, Loch Ness and the Isle of Skye. Longer tours like an 8-day or a 6-day tour allow you to travel further north, with routes reaching destinations such as Orkney and Shetland.

Yes, accommodation is included in the price of your Scotland tour. Most trips feature locally run guesthouses with breakfast included. Some tours also offer hotel stays, and on selected departures you may have the option of multi-share hostel accommodation.

The type of accommodation offered will be clearly outlined on each individual tour page.

Some tours offer single room availability for guests who travel solo. A single room supplement applies and availability is limited, so we recommend booking early.

We offer both small group tours and standard group tours from Edinburgh.

  • Small group tours have a maximum of 16 passengers. These usually run on a mini coach, though on occasion a slightly larger vehicle may be used if needed.
  • Standard group tours operate on midi-sized coaches and can carry up to 34 passengers.

If a tour is not labelled as small group, it operates as a standard group tour.

We welcome travellers of all ages, although children must be 5 years or older to travel with us. If you have specific accessibility needs, we recommend reviewing our accessibility information before booking to ensure the tour is a good fit.

Your tour price includes transport by coach, a knowledgeable local driver-guide, and accommodation with breakfast (where stated). Some attractions or optional experiences may be paid for locally, giving you the flexibility to choose what suits you.

Additional inclusions vary by tour and are listed clearly on each tour page.

Cancellation policies vary depending on the tour. Multi-day trips have different notice periods compared to day tours, so we recommend you review the cancellation details for your chosen tour in Section 3 of our Terms and Conditions.

To cancel, please contact us in writing.

Our Scotland tours from Edinburgh are designed to balance guided experiences with independent time. You’ll enjoy storytelling and insights from your guide along the way, with opportunities to explore towns, scenic spots, and attractions at your own pace.

Each itinerary outlines where where you’ll have free time to explore.

Scotland’s weather can change quickly, so we recommend packing a waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes, and clothing you can layer to adjust throughout the day. Even in summer, evenings can feel cool, and in winter you’ll want warm accessories like a hat, gloves, and scarf.

You can find more detailed packing advice in our full travel checklist for your Scotland tour.

Please visit our general FAQs for more useful information. You can also chat with us via our website's chat function or get in touch via phone or email.
